The National Youth Peace Summit brought together student leaders and civil society delegates from multiple regions to discuss conflict resolution and civic responsibility. Participants worked toward consensus on how young people can take part in civic governance.

Why does youth peacebuilding matter in Somalia?

Young people are the largest group in the country. Nearly eight in ten Somalis are under 35, in a population of close to 20 million (UNTMIS, 5 November 2025). Decisions about peace and governance affect them most, and their participation shapes what comes next.

The government has recognized this. UNTMIS reports that the Federal Government has developed a National Action Plan for Youth, Peace and Security, which builds on the National Youth Policy and recognizes the role of young people in peacebuilding and development. On 5 November 2025, the Ministry of Youth and Sports held a Youth Dialogue in Mogadishu with UN support, bringing together more than 40 young people from civil society groups.

What happened at the summit?

The peacebuilding forum connected delegates from different regions. Student leaders and civil society representatives discussed conflict resolution and the civic duties of young citizens, and worked to build consensus on youth participation in civic governance.

What does civic participation look like in practice?

Barwaqo Forum's leadership work focuses on five practical areas: decision-making skills, community leadership, responsible citizenship, civic participation and youth involvement in governance. In practice this means young people learn to listen to different views, take responsibility, and work with others on shared solutions.

What comes next?

A summit is a starting point. Lasting results depend on follow-up: continued dialogue, community projects and links with government and civil society partners. Barwaqo Forum also runs peacebuilding and social cohesion campaigns, and young people can join them.
